September Fair and Virgen de la Sierra Festivities in Cabra

Cabra's main festivities combine the Real Feria with devotion to María Santísima de la Sierra, the city's patron and perpetual mayoress.

Celebration date

The fair is traditionally held from 3 to 8 September. The Bajá takes place on 4 September and the main day is 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, with a solemn religious service and glorious procession.

Where it is held

The Bajá leaves the Santuario de la Virgen de la Sierra on the Picacho and descends to Cabra. Events extend across the parish church of Asunción y Ángeles, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de España, Parque Alcántara Romero, the Real de la Feria and numerous cultural and sporting venues.

History and recognition

The council programme documents celebrations dedicated to the Virgin from long ago and records the fair's continuous 3-8 September format since 1945. The festivities were declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1972.

The Bajá and triumphant entry

On 4 September, bearers, brotherhoods, horse riders, pilgrims and devotees accompany the patron from her sanctuary. After a welcome at San Francisco y San Rodrigo, the image enters at night through the Arcos de la antigua calle Baena amid fireworks, music, carriages and floats.

Events and traditions

  • Proclamation, investiture of the festival queen and king, and switching-on of the illuminations.
  • Casetas, fairground rides, concerts and Feria al Mediodía.
  • Paseo de Caballos and Batalla de Flores.
  • Masses, flag-waving, procession and the Salve sung outside the Town Hall.
  • Children's, cultural and sporting activities, plus gatherings for the Egabrense Ausente and Día de la Mujer.
  • Fireworks closing the procession on 8 September.

Organisation and participation

The Town Council coordinates the civic fair and the Real Archicofradía de María Santísima de la Sierra organises the religious services. The Hermandad de San Rodrigo Mártir-Costaleros, bands, societies, associations, clubs, hospitality businesses, fair workers, security forces and emergency services also take part.
