Today, 26 August: Buñol gets ready for La Tomatina

Buñol holds its 2026 La Tomatina tomato-throwing festival on Wednesday 26 August. The town council's tourism diary schedules the main battle from noon until 1 pm, while the Valencian Government's tourism listing confirms the date and states that admission requires a ticket. The event continues the tradition of taking place on the final Wednesday of August and is recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. Its employment status is strictly municipal: the official Valencian calendar designates 26 August as a paid, non-recoverable local public holiday in Buñol, not across the Valencian Community or throughout Spain.

In Buñol, the tomato moves from ingredient to leading performer for one carefully timed hour tomorrow. Ticket holders should check the organisers' final notices, arrive with time to spare and follow the staff managing the route, as this is a large event with controlled admission. Old clothes tend to grasp the occasion better than anything newly bought, while protecting personal belongings helps prevent the red souvenir reaching a phone as well. The council diary says the battle finishes at 1 pm; after that, giving the cleaning operation room to work lets the streets, the participants and the tomatoes return gradually to a rather less eventful existence.

Tomorrow, 27 August: Tarazona opens its festivities with the Cipotegato

Tarazona opens its 2026 festivities in honour of San Atilano with the Cipotegato on Thursday 27 August. The council diary confirms that the programme runs from 27 August to 1 September, while the council's account of the tradition places the character's departure from the town hall at noon, before a large crowd and beneath a shower of tomatoes. The event has held Spain's National Tourist Interest designation since 2009. It is not, however, a public holiday: the Official Gazette of Aragon lists 28 August and 5 October as Tarazona's two local public holidays for 2026, rather than 27 August.

The person inside the diamond-patterned costume remains anonymous until the run is over, so tomorrow the mystery shares top billing with the tomatoes. The Cipotegato leaves the square, follows an undisclosed route and returns to climb the monument while the crowd cheers. The council's own description notes that the descent from the square comes next and that crushed tomatoes make the ground slippery: sturdy footwear, well-used clothes and some awareness of nearby people are a remarkably practical trio. Joining in is part of the character of the day, but so are giving the escort room to work and checking any final council notices before heading into the centre.
