Anniversary

Lepanto endures in Spain's naval and literary memory

The Battle of Lepanto took place on 7 October 1571, when the Holy League and the Ottoman fleet met in a major naval engagement in the Greek gulf of the same name. The allied fleet was commanded by John of Austria; Miguel de Cervantes was among those who fought, and he was wounded. The National Library of Spain preserves works and accounts connected with the episode, while Madrid's Naval Museum devotes part of its displays to the setting, leading figures and surviving objects associated with that day.

The anniversary is an invitation to look beyond a single date in a history book. At the Naval Museum, models, weapons, paintings and documents trace the story; from home, the National Library's digital exhibition links the battle with Cervantes and the literature that grew around the event. It makes for a cultural route with several possible stops: maritime history, Spain's written heritage and the life of an author who would later turn his experience into one of the most memorable references found in the world of Don Quixote.

Observance

Spanish Cinema Day brings films to new screens

Spain marks Spanish Cinema Day on Tuesday 6 October, an observance established by the Council of Ministers in 2021 to recognise the cultural, social and heritage value of the country's filmmaking. The 2026 programme, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture through the ICAA and Filmoteca Española, extends the circulation of Spanish films at home and abroad, with screenings across five continents and particular attention to small towns and rural communities. The date recalls the completion of production on «Esa pareja feliz», directed by Luis García-Berlanga and Juan Antonio Bardem.

Joining the celebration does not require a red carpet: finding a screening, visiting a film archive or choosing a Spanish film for an unhurried viewing is enough. Madrid's Cine Doré marks the day with the 2021 restoration of «Esa pareja feliz» and other films recently restored by Filmoteca Española, including «El inquilino» and «Angustia». With events spread across different places, 6 October offers a practical invitation to discover classics, revisit recent work and see how cinema heritage stays alive when it reaches an audience. Popcorn remains optional, curiosity rather less so.

Regional public holiday

La Gomera marks its island public holiday for Our Lady of Guadalupe

La Gomera observes its island-wide public holiday for Our Lady of Guadalupe on Monday 5 October. Decree 61/2025 of the Canary Islands Government includes the date in the 2026 working calendar for the island, alongside the holidays shared across the archipelago. It is a paid, non-recoverable public holiday in La Gomera rather than a holiday applying throughout the Canary Islands. The calendar published in Spain's Official State Gazette records the same territorial distinction, while each municipality also retains its two separately approved local holidays.

The Canaries have a small collection of island-specific dates, and 5 October belongs to La Gomera. Anyone working, studying or planning an appointment there should allow for the holiday and check office, transport and service hours in advance. The useful distinction is that the date does not automatically close the whole archipelago: each island keeps its own designated celebration. The Canary Islands calendar page brings together the shared, island and local holidays, making it a practical place to check before arranging travel, paperwork or a particularly ambitious Monday schedule.

Crevillent celebrates its main Sunday of Moors and Christians

Crevillent marks one of the main days of its 2026 Patron Saint and Moors and Christians festivities on Sunday 4 October. The celebration holds International Tourist Interest status, and the programme brings together parades, embassies and comparsa events throughout the day. The council's music programme adds El Postre at midday in Plaça de la Comunitat Valenciana, followed by Tallarina On Tour at the municipal venue on Carrer Óscar Esplá in the evening. Festive and patronal events continue on Monday 5 October, which is a local public holiday.

Sunday sees Crevillent shift gear through marching music, elaborate costumes and busy streets. Anyone hoping to follow the festival without missing a key event should check the official programme first, identify the parade routes and allow extra time to move around the centre. The midday music provides a more informal pause before the programme gathers pace again, while the municipal venue keeps the atmosphere going into the evening. It is also sensible to consult the council's latest traffic, safety and timetable notices before setting out.

Esporles opens its sweetest weekend with art

Esporles holds its third Dolça Nit de l’Art on Saturday 3 October, the evening prelude to Sunday’s twentieth Fira Dolça. The town council says the art display begins at 6 pm along Passeig del Rei, with particular attention given to local creators. The 2026 programme also includes an exhibition of posters from all twenty editions at Sa Fàbrica from 5 pm, radio and family circus events, wine and pastry tastings, the Broadway bites show in Plaça de l’Ajuntament and music sessions continuing until 10 pm.

The main fair waits until Sunday, but Esporles offers a rather tempting Saturday mixture of art, strolling, music and something sweet in between. Visitors can begin with the historic posters at Sa Fàbrica, browse the artists’ stalls along Passeig del Rei and then choose between circus, tastings and live performances. Activities are spread around several central venues, so checking the council programme and traffic notices before setting out will make the evening easier. A sensible route also leaves enough energy for anyone planning to return for the full Fira Dolça the following day.

Soria celebrates San Saturio's feast day

Soria marks the main day of its 2026 San Saturio festivities on Friday 2 October, honouring the city's patron saint. The council programme begins at 9 am with a morning reveille and street parade by the Municipal Band. Nuevo Mester de Juglaría performs in Plaza Mayor at 1.30 pm; at about 8 pm, ceremonial firecrackers honour the saint in Plaza Mariano Granados, accompanied by the Capilla del Santo. Dancing starts in Plaza Mayor at 9 pm, and the fireworks display is scheduled for 10.30 pm above the Alameda de Cervantes.

The day offers a festival itinerary from morning until late: music fills the streets first, a landmark Castilian folk group takes the lunchtime slot, and dancing and fireworks close the evening. Visitors can link the morning parade with the concert, then return for the firecrackers, open-air dance and display, allowing enough time to walk between Plaza Mayor, Plaza Mariano Granados and the Alameda. Checking the council's latest notices before setting out is sensible for any timetable adjustments, access information or practical advice on what is one of Soria's busiest and most distinctive dates.

Puerto Lumbreras opens its patronal festivities

Puerto Lumbreras begins its 2026 Our Lady of the Rosary Patronal Festival on Thursday 1 October, with events continuing until Wednesday 7 October. The opening day brings the official launch, an opening address and the first live music in the council programme. From Friday, Avenida Región Murciana introduces a new daytime-fair format with music and marquees, while the rest of the week includes a float parade, concerts, religious ceremonies, activities for different age groups and fireworks. The celebration ends on the patron saint's day with Mass, music and the final firework display.

The opening day offers a useful first look before the busiest part of the programme arrives. Visitors on Thursday can attend the opening address and early performances, browse the full schedule and decide which later dates best suit their plans. Events are spread across the week until 7 October, from the daytime fair and float parade to concerts and the procession, so there is no need to squeeze everything into one outing. Checking the latest council notices before travelling remains sensible, particularly for confirmed times, access arrangements and any late changes across the festival venues.
