Our Lady of Remedies and the Holy Christ of the Rock Festivities
Campo Real holds its patronal festivities in September around two devotions: the Virgen de los Remedios and the Santísimo Cristo de la Peña. Novenas, transfers, Masses and processions share the programme with peñas, music, sport and popular events.
Celebration date
The celebrations take place in the first half of September. 8 September is dedicated to the Virgen de los Remedios, while 14 September, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, is the principal day of the Santísimo Cristo de la Peña.
Venues
Events for the Virgin start at the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. Celebrations for the Christ focus on its chapel and, for the solemn service, the Centro Cultural San Isidro. Processions pass through Campo Real and Plaza Mayor hosts much of the popular programme.
History of the Cristo de la Peña
The council's account dates the devotion to the 18th century. Local legend says that a shepherd saw a crucified Christ beside a spring where livestock drank. After neighbours witnessed a further apparition, a chapel was built on the site.
Religious events
- The Virgen de los Remedios novena from late August.
- The Virgin's processional transfer and solemn Mass on 8 September.
- Triduum, adoration, veneration and floral offering to the Santísimo Cristo de la Peña.
- Eucharist and transfer of the Christ on 13 September.
- Solemn Mass and procession of the Cristo de la Peña on the 14th.
Popular programme and participation
Peñas, associations, sports clubs, the parish and the council support a broad programme including the opening proclamation, music, competitions, children's activities, sport, bull-related events and the communal caldereta. Routes and traffic restrictions may change, so visitors should check council notices before travelling.
