San Bernabé Festivals in Logroño

Logroño celebrates its patron saint, San Bernabé, by recalling the city's resistance during the siege of 1521. The festival combines the ceremonies of the Voto de San Bernabé, a procession, historical re-enactments, a Renaissance market, folklore, music and food across the old town.

Celebration date

The main day is 11 June, the feast of San Bernabé and a local public holiday in Logroño. The programme usually extends over several days around that date, with preliminary events and a closing day traditionally dedicated to those who fell.

Historical origins

In 1521, during the war between the Spanish Monarchy and France, troops led by André de Foix, Lord of Lesparre, laid siege to Logroño. The city resisted until the attacking army withdrew around 11 June. Tradition links its survival to bread, stored wine and fish from the Ebro, foods that now symbolise the commemoration.

After the episode, the city adopted San Bernabé as its patron and made a perpetual vow. The festival preserves ceremonies that recall this collective promise and the defence of Logroño.

The Voto de San Bernabé

  • Solemn Mass and procession with the saint's image.
  • Three ceremonial waves of the city flag by the mayor at symbolic points: Arco de San Bernabé, Cuatro Cantones and Puerta del Revellín.
  • Distribution of bread, fish and wine beside the Murallas del Revellín.
  • Floral offering, historical commemoration and lighting of the luminarias on the eve.
  • A serving of stewed beef in fulfilment of another traditional vow.

Venues and atmosphere

Santa María de la Redonda co-cathedral, calle Portales, Puerta and Murallas del Revellín, parque del Ebro, plaza del Mercado and other old-town squares host the main events. Camps and re-enactments portray episodes from the siege, while the Renaissance Market, local peñas and folklore groups fill the centre with activity.

Recognition and participation

The celebrations are designated a Festival of National Tourist Interest. The City Council, Cofradía Logroñesa de San Bernabé, Cofradía del Pez, re-enactment associations, peñas, dance and music groups, volunteers and many residents all take part.
