Tortosa Renaissance Festival

The Festa del Renaixement turns Tortosa's historic centre into a re-creation of the 16th-century city. Civic ceremonies, music, theatre, encampments, markets and residents in period dress evoke one of the Ebro capital's most prosperous eras.

Celebration date

It is usually held over four days on the third weekend in July. The exact dates change each year; the 2026 festival ran from 16 to 19 July.

It is not a general public holiday: this is a historical, cultural and popular celebration.

Where it takes place

The main setting is Tortosa's old town. Portal del Romeu, Santa Maria Cathedral, the Reials Col·legis, Suda Castle, Plaça de la Catedral and Plaça de l'Absis, Remolins, Clos del Riu and many historic streets and courtyards all form part of the festival.

Origins and history

The first festival was held in 1996. The project was inspired by research into a 1544 notebook describing the groups responsible for defending the different sections of the city walls, the trasts, under Charles V. This document provided a firm historical basis for reviving Renaissance Tortosa.

The 16th century left the city an exceptional legacy, including the Reials Col·legis, the cathedral, the municipal archive cabinet and the writings of Cristòfor Despuig. The festival was conceived to advance culture and tourism and help revitalise the historic centre.

Events and traditions

  • The Crida del Consell, ceremonial opening of the gates and inaugural ceremony.
  • City procurators, mace-bearers, noble families, flag throwers and ceremonial groups in the streets.
  • The Gran Desfilada Artística and display of arms by the trasts.
  • Mercat d'Època and Mercat del Vall, with crafts, trades and food.
  • Theatre, early music, comedy courtyards, encampments and roaming performers.
  • Visits and shows connected with the cathedral, Reials Col·legis and Suda Castle.

Participation and atmosphere

Community involvement is central: thousands of people wear historical costume, decorate streets, run taverns or take part as volunteers and association members. The programme combines careful historical research with family entertainment and contemporary productions.
