The Passion of Esparreguera
La Passió d'Esparreguera is a stage portrayal of the public life, Passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. The local community sustains a large-scale production that combines a tradition with medieval roots and contemporary scenery, lighting and sound.
Usual date
The season is normally held on weekends during Lent and Holy Week, between March and May. Dates and formats vary each year and should be checked in the organising foundation's listings.
Venue
Performances take place at the Teatre de La Passió in Esparreguera. Its large auditorium and stage facilities accommodate dozens of scenes, scenery changes, a choir and a live orchestra.
Origins and history
The foundation links modern Passion plays to the medieval misteris. The production has been passed on and transformed over centuries through the work of generations of local people. The Catalan government declared it of national interest in 1983 and awarded it the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2012.
The performance
The traditional format occupies a morning and an afternoon. The first part follows Jesus's public life, from the choice of the apostles to the Last Supper; the second portrays the trial, the road to Calvary, the crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Some seasons also offer a condensed format.
Music and community involvement
Music written for the production is performed live by an orchestra, choir and organ. Actors and hundreds of extras are joined by stage, costume, make-up, lighting, sound and front-of-house teams. This collective involvement makes the play a cultural expression of the whole town.
