Festa Major de Santa Rosalia in Torredembarra

The Festa Major de Santa Rosalia is Torredembarra's patronal celebration. It brings devotion to Santa Rosalia, Catalan popular culture, live music and neighbourhood life into the squares and streets of the historic centre.

Usual date

It takes place from late August into the first days of September. 4 September, Santa Rosalia's feast day, holds the solemn service and the principal events of the Seguici Popular; the programme commonly continues over the following weekend.

Where it is held

The ceremonial heart of the festival lies around Sant Pere Apòstol parish church, the Town Hall, Plaça del Castell, Plaça de la Vila and the old town. Processions pass through streets including Joan Güell, Major, Ample, Antoni Roig, Gibert and Santa Rosalia, while some concerts and sporting events use larger venues and the beaches.

Origins of the devotion

The Town Council identifies Santa Rosalia of Palermo — the Sicilian noblewoman Rosalia Sinibaldi (1130-1156) — as the town's patron saint. Torredembarra observes two cycles connected with her: the Festa del Quadre in July and this Festa Major around 4 September. They are related celebrations, but have distinct programmes and rituals.

Events and traditions

  • The Crida, bell-ringing and twelve mortar blasts announce the central days.
  • The Seguici Popular brings together traditional dances, devils, festive beasts, giants, big-head figures, the Eagle and the Lion, accompanied by grallers and minstrels.
  • The vigil and patronal day feature the musicians' entrance, processions, spoken dances, the carretillada, Mass, veneration of the relic and a floral offering.
  • Castells, sardanes, regattas, concerts, dancing, theatre, children's events and fireworks broaden the celebration.

A participative and inclusive festival

The Town Council, festival committees, cultural and sporting associations, the groups in the seguici and volunteers sustain the programme. The 2026 edition announces quiet sections, reserved viewing areas for people with reduced mobility and sign-language interpretation for the opening address; these provisions should be checked in each annual programme.
