Festa Major of the Mare de Déu de la Riera in Les Borges del Camp

Les Borges del Camp's Festa Major brings together devotion, fire, music and community life around the Arribada of the Mare de Déu de la Riera, the celebration's most distinctive moment.

Usual date

The festival traditionally centres on 7, 8, 9 and 10 September and continues with the Diada Nacional de Catalunya events on the 11th. On 7 September, the eve of the Mare de Déu de la Riera feast day, the moving Arribada takes place.

Where it is held

Events fill the streets and squares of Les Borges del Camp. Plaça de l'Església, the parish church, the Mare de Déu de la Riera hermitage, the envelat and Poliesportiu El Garrigó are among the usual venues.

The Arribada

The Arribada procession carries the image of the Mare de Déu de la Riera into the town. The Diables precede her entrance, the mayor names her honorary mayoress, the Cor Parroquial sings the Salve Regina, and the occasion culminates with fireworks, entry into the church and the besamanos.

The Ball de Diables

The diables have appeared regularly during the Festa Major since the 1880s, although earlier references exist. The tradition preserves one of the living examples of the old form of the ball de diables in the Baix Camp and is regarded as a leading example in the district.

Recognition and festive heritage

In 2010, the Generalitat de Catalunya declared the Festa Major of Les Borges del Camp a traditional festival of national interest and its Ball de Diables a festive heritage element of national interest.

Events and participation

The programme brings together an opening proclamation, tronada, processions, religious services, sardanes, giants, children's and sporting activities, concerts and dancing. The town's cultural, religious, youth and sports organisations help to stage it.
