Our Lady of the Cross Festival in Escalona del Prado

Escalona del Prado holds its September patronal festival around the Virgen de la Cruz. Devotion at the chapel is joined by street music, floats, live music, shared meals and activities organised by the Town Council, confraternity, cultural association and the year's young people.

Usual date

The main programme is normally concentrated in early September. The detailed 2026 calendar runs from 3 to 7 September, after a Semana Cultural held on several August dates and continuing until the eve of the festival.

Where it takes place

Events are spread across Escalona del Prado. The chapel hosts the floral offering, novena, Mass and processions; Plaza Mayor is the setting for the dinner, concerts and open-air dances; while the school, swimming pool, frontón, park and Salón Cultural host family activities, meals and other festivities.

The Virgin, chapel and confraternity

The official 2026 festival book dates the chapel to the sixteenth century and records the Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de la Cruz from the seventeenth century. The dressed image of the Virgen de la Cruz is the town's patron and the focus of September's religious observances.

Events and traditions

  • Floral offering, novena, Masses and processions honouring the Virgen de la Cruz.
  • A parade of peñas and floats, with recognition for the strongest entries.
  • Street music with dulzaina and drum, followed by a vermouth session with a charanga.
  • Open-air dances, concerts and DJ sessions in Plaza Mayor.
  • A community lunch, Cena del Segador and activities for children and families.
  • Participation by the Virgin's camareros and camareras and the year's quintos.

A community celebration

The programme reflects shared organisation: the Town Council leads the patronal festival, the confraternity supports the worship, the cultural association prepares many activities and the quintos contribute to the celebrations. Residents, people returning to the village and visitors meet in familiar local spaces.
