Gran Marmitada in Santoña
Gran Marmitada brings Santoña together around marmite, the local seafarers' stew of tuna and potatoes. Communal preparation, public servings and music make the day one of the town's great food traditions.
Usual date
It is held on the Thursday after 8 September, during the Virgen del Puerto patronal festivities.
See the Gran Marmitada 2026 programme.
Where it is held
The day takes place in Santoña. Volunteers prepare the potatoes in Plaza de San Antonio, while the Gran Marmitada servings occupy the festival area designated by the organisers. Concerts are held at Campa del Glacis and the fishing harbour.
A celebration of maritime identity
Gran Marmitada forms part of the Virgen del Puerto patronal week, when the town expresses its connection with fishing, the bay and the Cofradía de Pescadores. The council presents it as one of the festival's four pillars, alongside the maritime procession, rowing regattas and popular traditions.
Marmite and community participation
Marmite combines northern albacore tuna and potatoes in a stew linked to fishermen's cooking. The celebration starts before the servings with communal tasks such as peeling and cutting potatoes. Thousands of portions then introduce the dish to residents and visitors.
Atmosphere and audience
Local brass bands, concerts and orchestras accompany an event open to all ages. The communal preparation and tasting offer a direct encounter with Santoña's food heritage in its port setting.
