Feast of Our Lady of the Pine in Teror

Usual date

The principal days are 7 and 8 September. The romería offering takes place on the 7th and the solemnity of Nuestra Señora del Pino on the 8th. The cultural, sporting and religious programme usually begins in the second half of August and continues for several weeks in September.

Where it is held

The religious centre is the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino and Plaza del Pino. The romería travels from Castañero Gordo to the square, while concerts and open-air dances use Plaza and Parque de Sintes, Alameda Pío XII and other streets in central Teror.

History and devotion

The documentation assembled by the council traces the festival's popular roots to at least the 16th and 17th centuries. The present basilica was built between 1760 and 1767, when growing devotion required a larger church. The image is an important Marian reference for Gran Canaria and the Diocese of the Canary Islands.

The Descent of the image from its upper chamber became a public ceremony in 1928. A rail-and-platform system allowed it to take place more safely before the congregation. The Descent and later Return have since formed part of the festival cycle.

Romería offering and main day

On the afternoon of 7 September, carts and groups representing Gran Canaria's municipalities bring produce and island folklore to the Virgin. The eve continues with an open-air dance and fireworks. On 8 September there are Masses, an official reception, solemn Mass and a procession through the old town.

Heavy attendance and traffic restrictions make it sensible to check the special public transport and authorised access arrangements each year.
