Nava Cider Festival

Nava Cider Festival turns this town in the Comarca de la Sidra into a major gathering devoted to Asturian natural cider. Cider-house and pourer competitions, tastings, popular culture, music and street life give the celebration its distinct identity.

Usual date

It is held around the second weekend in July. Technical and cultural activities normally begin during the preceding week, while Saturday concentrates the cider competition final, the opening address and the launch of the Ruta de la Sidra. The international cider pourers' competition and other popular events continue on Sunday.

Where it is held

The main setting is central Nava, particularly the arcades and balcony of the Town Hall and Plaza Manuel Uría. Llagar de Sorribes hosts stages of the competitions, while the Cider Museum of Asturias, San Bartolomé Church, the cider houses and other streets around the town provide further venues.

Origin and history

Nava Town Council documents the festival from 1969. It began as a tribute to and a showcase for natural cider and grew from an event initially held at intervals into an annual celebration. It is the oldest of Asturias's cider festivals.

The festival has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest. Its continuity has helped establish Nava as one of the leading centres of cider production, alongside the Cider Museum and its mixture of traditional and modern cider houses.

Competitions and cider rituals

  • Competition for the best natural cider produced in the Principality of Asturias, with a separate award for cider made in Nava.
  • Competition for new-expression ciders and apple products.
  • International Cider Pourers' Competition, showcasing the skill of pouring cider from a height.
  • Opening address from the Town Hall balcony, ceremonial rocket and opening of the street barrels for the Ruta de la Sidra.
  • Tastings, cancios de chigre, cider fraternisation and children's activities linked to cider culture.

An open celebration

Cider houses, growers, pourers, cider brotherhoods, traditional music groups, hospitality businesses, local associations, residents and visitors all take part. The programme combines professional and educational events with tastings and free performances in public spaces.
