Bous a la Mar in Dénia
Bous a la Mar is the most distinctive bull-running event in Dénia's Festa Major, held in honour of the Santíssima Sang. It takes place in an arena beside the water: participants dodge the animal and use the sea as an escape route, while a safety operation returns it to land if it enters the water.
Usual date
Sessions take place in the first half of July during Festa Major week. The calendar is organised around the second Wednesday after Saint Peter's Day, the feast of the Santíssima Sang and a local public holiday in Dénia. Exact dates and sessions are published annually.

Where it is held
The main event is held in the semicircular bull-running arena in Dénia's port area, beside the fish market and open towards the sea. The Entrada de Bous is separate from the arena session: it brings the cattle through the town centre to the harbour arena along the route announced for each edition.
Origins and history
Municipal tourism sources link its background to earlier bull festivities and to the Saint Peter celebrations in the seafaring Baix la Mar district. Its present form is associated with the early decades of the 20th century, when the fishing quay was being built. Bous a la Mar was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1993 for its distinctive character and deep local roots.
How it works
Runners draw and dodge a heifer in the harbour arena. The water beside the ring allows a participant to jump into the sea when the animal approaches; if the animal follows, a boat and trained staff help return it to land. The official programme clearly distinguishes the street entrada from the performance inside the arena.
Safety and spectators
This is a bull-running event carrying risks for participants and animals. Anyone taking part must comply with the rules, age limits, access checks and instructions set for that edition. Spectators should remain in authorised areas and check for timetable changes or restrictions.
