Living Passion of Oliva de la Frontera
The Pasión Viviente turns the streets and squares of Oliva de la Frontera into open-air stages portraying the last days of Jesus. Hundreds of local people take part as performers, extras and helpers in a story that moves through different parts of the town.
Usual date
The main scenes are spread across Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The dramatic core continues on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, although the complete cycle covers all four days. Exact dates move with the Holy Week calendar.

Stages and route
Plaza de España, Paseo de las Palmeras, Plaza de la Constitución and Plaza del Ayuntamiento host successive scenes. On Good Friday, the road to Calvary follows Calle Ángel Matos and Calle Virgen de Gracia to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Gracia, where the crucifixion is portrayed.
Origins and history
The first performance took place in 1976. Parish priest José Ramos Capilla and a group of young people and adults prepared scripts based on the Gospels and used the town's spaces as natural stages. The initiative also drew on the memory of an earlier Descent from the Cross enacted with the articulated figure of Christ from the parish church of San Marcos Evangelista.
Scenes and participation
The story includes miracles and the entry into Jerusalem, the expulsion of the merchants, Last Supper, prayer in the Garden, trials before Caiaphas, Pilate and Herod, the road to Calvary, crucifixion and resurrection. The organisers report that more than 500 people now take part, reflecting the festival's collective character.
Recognition
The Pasión Viviente was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2018. Alongside its religious meaning, it is a cultural and visitor event created by the local association, parish and wider community.
