Festes del Tura in Olot

Olot's main festival fills the streets with popular culture, music and community life. Its most recognisable protagonists are the Gegants, Cabeçuts and Cavallets of the city's traditional figures.

Usual date

The festival is held around 7 and 8 September. The feast of the Mare de Déu del Tura on 8 September is its main day.

Where it is held

Events occupy central Olot: the Santuari del Tura, Plaça Major, Firal, Firalet, Hospici and many squares and streets in the Nucli Antic. The celebrations are free, popular and mainly held outdoors.

History and recognition

The earliest documented references to the festivities date from 1636. Their present form became established from the mid-19th century around 7 and 8 September.

The Generalitat de Catalunya declared them a heritage festival of national interest. Their live music programme has also received Catalan music-industry awards.

Traditional figures and customs

  • Appearances and dances by the Gegants, Cabeçuts and Cavallets, accompanied by the Cap de Lligamosques.
  • Parades, sardanes, festive bell-ringing, a floral offering and services at the Santuari del Tura.
  • The opening speech, Esclat del Volcanet, Batalla de les Flors, correfoc and events organised by local associations.
  • Concerts and family and sporting activities across the city.
  • A farewell with fireworks, Ball Pla d’Olot, the sardana Adeu vila d’Olot and the Ball de les Espelmes.

Organisation and participation

Ajuntament d’Olot, the Comissió de Festes, municipal services and many cultural, sporting and neighbourhood organisations support a programme open to residents and visitors.
