Valdepeñas Wine and Grape Harvest Festival

Valdepeñas celebrates its winemaking identity through a festival joining the grape harvest and wine culture with the peñas and devotion to the Virgen de Consolación. Tastings, Manchegan food, music, folk culture and patronal events fill the town centre in the first week of September.

Usual date

The official festival usually runs from 1 to 8 September, although its programme commonly includes sporting, cultural and wine-tourism events from the second half of August.

Where it is held

Plaza de España is the main setting for the opening, concerts, orchestras and public gatherings. Events spread across Plaza de la Constitución, Plazoleta Balbuena, the Wine Museum, La Confianza Cultural Centre, wineries, parks, sports facilities, the Asunción de Nuestra Señora parish church and many central streets.

Origins and identity

A speech preserved by the council explains that the modern festival revived, in the 1950s, a tradition connected with much earlier celebrations honouring the town's patron. Its historic title also embraced poetry and the harvest. Wine remains the event's cultural, economic and symbolic focus, alongside the town's religious and festive heritage.

Events and traditions

  • A peñas parade, opening wine, a festive address by the year's peña manijera and recognition of Valdepeñas people or organisations.
  • The offering of the first must to the Virgen de Consolación, a floral offering, the 8 September Eucharist and the patron's procession.
  • Tastings, the Túnel del Vino, winery and Wine Museum activities, and sessions explaining the journey from vine to wine.
  • Limoná, local-dish and street-painting competitions and peñas' games.
  • A Manchegan musical round, folk performances, music, theatre, exhibitions, concerts and afternoon entertainment.
  • Manchegan food including pisto, tiznao, moje vendimiero, migas and pairings with local wines.

A town-wide celebration

The council, peñas, religious brotherhoods, wineries, cultural, sports and charitable associations, museums, artists, traders, residents and visitors create a programme spread across the town. Some tastings, tours and performances may require registration, an invitation or a ticket in a given year.
