Living Passion of Castro Urdiales
The Pasión Viviente turns Castro Urdiales's historic centre into a large open-air stage. Costumed residents portray Jesus's final hours between the esplanade beside Santa María, the streets of the old town and La Atalaya, bringing together community theatre, monumental heritage and far-reaching local involvement.
Usual date
The main performance takes place on the morning of Good Friday. The organisers may add an introduction on Maundy Thursday evening, so visitors should check the programme for each edition.
Locations and route
The play begins beside the church of Santa María de la Asunción. Scenes move through the old town, with the Town Hall and lighthouse area serving as landmarks, before the Way of the Cross climbs to La Atalaya. The Crucifixion, death, descent from the Cross and Resurrection are staged there.
Origins and history
The project began in 1984, when the priest Luis Campuzano, known as Father Sandalio, suggested the performance to a group of young people at a summer camp. The first edition took place in 1985. As the production grew, a cultural association was established to work throughout the year and coordinate performers, rehearsals and technical resources.
The festival was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2012.
Main scenes
The story includes the Last Supper, prayer in Gethsemane, Judas's kiss, the arrest, the trials before the Jewish Senate, Pilate and Herod, and Judas's remorse. The Way of the Cross includes the falls and encounters with Mary Magdalene, Mary, Veronica, Simon of Cyrene and the women of Jerusalem before the conclusion at La Atalaya.
Community and atmosphere
Hundreds of local actors and extras portray biblical characters, soldiers, townspeople and processions. Costumes, sets, horses, sound, safety and organisation require months of preparation. The audience follows the action from different points along the route and should respect marked passages and stewards' instructions.
Planning a visit
The performance lasts several hours outdoors and involves walking and gradients. Visitors should arrive early, use the designated viewing points and check official notices about access, mobility and any weather-related changes.
