Romper la Hora in Calanda

Date and duration

Romper la Hora begins at exactly 12:00 on Good Friday. The drumming continues during the day, pauses for the Soledad procession and resumes at 23:00. It ends permanently at 14:00 on Holy Saturday, after the tribute featuring the Marcha Palillera.

Venue and proceedings

Drummers gather beforehand in Plaza de España. At noon, the first beat breaks the silence and thousands of drumsticks answer in unison. Participants then move through Calanda's streets with drums and bass drums; the characteristic dress is a purple tunic and tercerol head covering.

Romper la Hora is not an isolated event. It belongs to a calendar that includes the Despertadores, the Stations of the Cross to Monte Calvario, brotherhood transfers and processions, religious services and the Santo Entierro. The communal drumming expresses mourning for the death of Christ while retaining a community dimension shared by generations of Calandinos.

Passing on the drum culture

Families, groups of friends and brotherhoods pass on the rhythms, instrument care and rules of participation. Drum and bass-drum making, tunic sewing and rehearsals throughout the year sustain a local culture built around sound and fellowship. Calanda-born filmmaker Luis Buñuel also helped bring the impact of this tradition to international attention.

Recognition

Holy Week in Calanda is designated a Festival of International Tourist Interest. Romper la Hora forms part of Spain's tamboradas, inscribed in 2018 on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which recognises these prolonged communal drumming rituals and their transmission between generations.
