Virgen de la Oliva Festivities in Ejea de los Caballeros

At the end of summer, Ejea holds its principal festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Oliva. Religious observances, music, peñas, processional figures, family activities and popular events spread across squares, neighbourhoods, avenues and the town's cultural and sports venues.

Usual date

The celebration normally starts on the last weekend in August and continues through the first week of September. The floral offering, solemn Mass and procession of the patron are held on 30 August.

Where it is held

Plaza de la Villa and the Town Hall entrance host the opening address and rocket launch. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Oliva is the focus of worship. Avenida Cosculluela, Plaza de España, Parque Central, the neighbourhoods, the Salvador area, Miguel Peropadre Cinco Villas bullring, Recinto Antiguo de Luchán and other venues share the remaining programme.

Events and traditions

  • The floral-and-fruit offering, solemn Mass and procession of the Virgen de la Oliva.
  • The opening address and rocket, children's pañuelico ceremony, giants, big-head figures, dulzaineros and charangas.
  • Morning music, communal breakfasts and neighbourhood street parties with peaches in wine and the toro de fuego.
  • Bull-runs and livestock-release competitions, together with events in the bullring.
  • Concerts, jota, orchestras, peña activities, children's entertainment and youth sessions.

A town-wide festival

The central programme is joined by events in Goya, Santa María, Cuco, Canal de las Bardenas, Carasoles, La Llana, Las Eras and Salvador. Processional figures, charangas and children's trains help connect these spaces and keep the celebration moving throughout the day.

Organisation and audiences

The Town Council and its Festival Council coordinate the programme with the parish, Cofradía de la Virgen de la Oliva, Interpeñas, neighbourhood associations, cultural organisations, music groups and other local bodies. Children, teenagers, older residents and families have dedicated activities, alongside inclusion measures and support spaces against violence.
