Día de la Faldeta in Fraga

Día de la Faldeta is Fraga's great tribute to its traditional dress and collective memory and, above all, to les dones de faldetes: the women who preserved Fraga's costume as everyday clothing.

Celebration date

The festival remains linked to 23 April, Saint George's Day and the Day of Aragon. Since 2010, the main celebration has moved to a nearby Sunday to make attendance easier, while the programme often stretches across several days or weeks in April.

Where it is held

Events take place across Fraga, with a particular focus on its historic centre. Plaza España, Jardines Juan Carlos I, San Pedro church, Paseo Barrón/Cegonyer and the streets hosting the historical scenes are regular venues.

Origins and history

Peña Fragatina organised a tribute to les dones de faldetes in 1977. The La Fragatina sculpture was unveiled in Plaza España in 1982, when the City Council joined the organisation. The first Estampas Fragatinas were staged in 1993, and the Boda Fragatina has been the centrepiece of the festival morning since 2010.

The celebration was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of Aragon in 2003 and a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2015.

Events and traditions

  • A parade of people wearing the different forms of Fraga's traditional costume.
  • The Boda Fragatina, a jota Mass, the wedding procession and the throwing of peladilles i confits.
  • Estampas Típicas recreating trades, domestic work, games and scenes from old Fraga.
  • Jota rounds, rondalla ensembles, music and the tribute to les dones de faldetes.
  • Balconies decorated with shawls, flags and festival motifs.

Traditional dress as living heritage

The faldeta is not presented merely as a museum piece. Families, associations, schools and local groups help pass on ways of dressing, styling hair and combining garments. The parade and re-enactments make that continuity between generations visible.
