Holy Week in Sorbas

Holy Week in Sorbas brings together processions and devotions from several brotherhoods around Santa María church and the streets of this Almería town. Religious images, music, mantillas and local participation create a celebration closely connected with the municipality's identity.

When it takes place

It is held every year from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, on dates that change with the liturgical calendar. Some services and preparations begin during Lent, and the detailed programme may vary from one edition to another.

Where it takes place

Santa María parish church is the principal place of worship and the departure or finishing point for several processions. La Borriquita is also associated with the San Roque hermitage. The processions pass through central Sorbas before returning to the church.

Brotherhoods and heritage

An institutional publication by Almería Provincial Council identifies five brotherhoods associated with the celebration: Nazareno, Macarena, Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, San Juan and Dolores. Their images include Virgen de los Dolores, a Neo-Baroque work made by Talleres Rius between 1941 and 1950.

Main processions

  • La Borriquita opens the celebration on Palm Sunday with the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem.
  • Nuestra Señora de las Angustias makes a procession on Good Friday morning.
  • The Santo Entierro procession passes through Sorbas on Good Friday night.
  • On Easter Sunday, Jesús Resucitado, Santa María Magdalena, San Juan Evangelista and Nuestra Señora del Rosario take part in the Encuentro procession.

Mantillas, music and food

Mantillas are one of the most recognisable features of Holy Week in Sorbas. Music also has a prominent place through the Banda de Música Santa Cecilia de Sorbas, which accompanies different processions. Seasonal dishes include papaviejos and salt-cod meatballs.

Organisation and participation

The brotherhoods organise their processions from the town's churches, and the band provides musical accompaniment. Brotherhood members, float bearers, musicians, women in mantillas, families and spectators share the streets during a week that combines worship, heritage and community life.
