Priego de Córdoba Feria Real

The Feria Real is one of Priego de Córdoba's major popular celebrations. It began as a livestock-trading event and now brings together marquees, fairground rides, live music, dancing, horse riders and family gatherings.

Usual date

It takes place between late August and the first few days of September. Exact dates, events and opening times change each year.

Where it is held

Since 1993, the fair has been based in Niceto Alcalá-Zamora urban park and the adjoining fairground. The Caseta Municipal, the La Alegría dance marquee, rides and the horse-riding promenade account for much of the activity. Individual events may also use Plaza de la Constitución, Coso de las Canteras, sports facilities and other Priego venues.

Origins and history

Priego's official tourism service dates the Feria Real to 1842, when livestock trading was its central purpose. It was once held in the town centre, attracting travelling traders, jugglers, circuses, conjurors and other entertainments. It gradually developed into a recreational fair with a strong regional draw while retaining a livestock-fair day.

Events and traditions

  • An opening street parade with Gigantes y Cabezudos and the switching-on of the special fair illuminations.
  • Marquees offering concerts, dancing and sevillanas, subject to each year's capacity arrangements.
  • Fairground rides, a children's day and, when scheduled, a low-noise period designed to make the fair more accessible to autistic people.
  • A flamenco-dress day, horse-riding promenade and competitions centred on dress and dance.
  • The livestock fair, a traditional improvised-verse contest and closing fireworks.

A fair for the wider area

The celebration welcomes residents of Priego and its outlying villages, visitors from neighbouring towns, marquee operators, travelling showpeople, cultural and sports associations, performers and traders. The council often provides dedicated buses from the villages and a town fair service; routes and times must be checked in the programme for the relevant year.
