Local festivals in Cullera

The Fiestas Mayores de la Mare de Déu del Castell, honouring the patron known as La Moreneta, are usually celebrated for nine days from the Saturday after Easter. The Baixà carries the image in an evening procession from the castle sanctuary down the Calvary path to the church of Santos Juanes.

From the Baixà to the Pujà

Processions, traditional dances, concerts and the National Brass Band Competition share the calendar with the fancy-dress parade and fireworks. During the Aurora, fishers and seafarers accompany the image along San Antonio beach; the Pujà finally returns the patron to her sanctuary.

Other celebrations: the Fallas

In March, the Fallas of Cullera fill the neighbourhoods with monuments, parades, brass-band music, despertàs, a floral offering to the Virgen del Castillo and the Nit del Foc. Fallas committees, musicians, artists and residents sustain a tradition that culminates in the cremà.
