Local festivals in Pego

The usual celebration of Moros i Cristians lasts several days in late June and precedes the Ecce-Homo patronal festival. Moorish and Christian comparsas parade through the town with bands, costumes, dance and pageantry; the Embassy depicts the Christian king's entry into the Moorish castle, and floats close the festival. Passeig Cervantes hosts a medieval market and activities, while captains, filaes, musicians, dancers, the Town Council and residents sustain the celebration.

Carnestoltes, Baixada del Bullent and Pinyata

The Carnival cycle usually occupies three consecutive Saturdays. Baixada del Riu Bullent begins the sequence with a race through the Marjal in boats built by the teams themselves; Carnestoltes transforms the streets with masks, fancy dress, music and mass participation; and Pinyata brings the cycle to an especially lively close. Families, groups of friends, associations and visitors share the routes and festival spaces.

Other events: Sant Antoni, la Crosta and Fallas

Sant Antoni is usually celebrated on 17 January beside the chapel, with the blessing of animals, three ritual circuits and a small fair selling sweets and nuts. At the beginning of Lent, families and friends eat Crosta —rice, meat, chickpeas and egg— at the beach or in the mountains. In March, Fallas committees fill the town with monuments, music, fireworks and fire.
