Local festivals in Albatera

The Patronal and Moors and Christians Festivities are usually celebrated during July in honour of Santiago Apóstol, around his feast day on the 25th. Four Moorish and four Christian comparsas, brought together by the local federation with Town Council support, fill the streets with music, costumes and festive fellowship.

Entradas, embassies and the Saludo al Patrón

The Moorish and Christian entradas, skirmishes, embassies and symbolic capture of the castle by both sides form the festival narrative. The Saludo al Patrón at midnight between 24 and 25 July connects the Moors and Christians performance with devotion to Santiago. The modern celebration became established in the 1970s and retains broad family participation.

Other celebrations: Virgen del Rosario

On the Sunday before San Vicente Monday, residents accompany the Virgen del Rosario to the hermitage in the mountain park for Mass and a community gathering before returning to Albatera. On 7 October, the patron's feast preserves the despierta, sung through the streets before dawn, and the traditional distribution of pomegranates.
