Local festivals in Totana
The patronal festival in honour of Santa Eulalia de Mérida, Totana’s patron saint since 1644, has its main days from 8 to 10 December and continues with the return pilgrimage on 7 January. The tradition links the town with the Santuario de La Santa on the lower slopes of Sierra Espuña.
Usual celebration
On 8 December, pilgrims and devotees carry the image from the sanctuary through Los Huertos and El Rulo to the San Roque chapel. Songs, folk dances, guitars, tambourines, local food and mantellina accompany the route. The image then moves to Santiago church and processes through the streets on Santa Eulalia’s day; on 7 January it returns to the sanctuary in a pilgrimage lasting several hours, organised with the Patronato de La Santa and local authorities.
Other celebrations
The Santiago Apóstol festivities are usually celebrated around 25 July. The National Habanera and Polyphony Competition, brass bands, open-air dances and sports events form part of this summer cycle.
