Local festivals in Quel

The Bread and Cheese Festival, recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest, is Quel's most distinctive celebration. Held each 6 August, it commemorates a vow made during the epidemic of 1479 and preserves a community tradition centred on the Santo Cristo chapel.

Usual celebration

The Brotherhood of the Transfiguration of the Lord accompanies a procession with Our Lady of Antigua to the chapel. Around 2,500 bread rolls and 50 kilograms of cheese are thrown from its balcony, symbolising the meal of bread, cheese and wine offered by the brotherhood. The town centre and chapel host the religious and festive events.

Other events

Quel also celebrates the May Cross, with Mass at the chapel on 3 May, and the September Cross on 14 September. The Plum Race and visits to Barrio Bodegas add to the town's cultural and food calendar.
