Local festivals in Poio

The patronal San Xoán festivities are usually celebrated for about six days around 24 June. A Seca and the square beside San Xoán Monastery host the opening address, open-air dances, traditional music, a communal sardine feast, the gathering of herbs and the great Midsummer bonfire, together with Mass and family events.

Local music and community organisation

The Town Council organises the festivities with the parish, Coral de Poio, Vides Novas, the Escola de Música Tradicional, Pandereteiras do Ronsel, Escola de Música de Poio, Escola de Acordeóns de Campelo and other groups. Dawn music, the Danza e Contradanza de Poio, bands and local voices give the celebration a distinctly Galician and participatory character.

Other celebrations: Maios and Festa da Ameixa

On 1 May, the Festa dos Maios fills the monastery square and Praza da Chousa in Combarro with greenery, satirical verses and music, including groups and traditional boats. In Campelo, the Festa da Ameixa celebrates maritime culture, the work of local shellfish gatherers and fishers, and clam cookery through tastings, gatherings and activities beside the estuary.
