Local festivals in Castelló d'Empúries

The Sant Llorenç main festival is usually celebrated for five days around 10 August. The town's streets and squares, Santa Maria basilica and Sala Polivalent host solemn mass, sardanes, a giants' gathering, a fire run, music and family activities. The Festival Committee, cultural associations, the parish, performers and residents sustain a celebration rooted in popular culture.

Other celebrations: Mare de Déu del Carme in Empuriabrava

Around 16 July, Empuriabrava holds several days of Carme festivities. The image travels through the canals in a maritime procession from the harbour entrance to the chapel, accompanied by decorated boats; beside the water there are sardanes, a giants' gathering, music and a blessing involving the parish, sailing organisations, musicians and residents.

Terra de Trobadors

For one weekend in September, the historic centre revives the medieval past of the county of Empúries. The basilica, Palau dels Comtes, squares and streets host a craft market, mounted tournament, theatre, music, staged combat, talks and a comital supper. The Town Council, festival co-ordinating body, associations and residents take part in period costume in one of the municipality's major cultural gatherings.
