Festivals in Herencia
Discover the festivals of Herencia, shaped by a Carnival with its own distinctive identity and by the Feria de la Merced, which combines devotion, folk culture and Manchegan farming traditions.
Local festivals in Herencia
Herencia Carnival is usually celebrated over several days before Ash Wednesday. Parades fill the streets with peñas, carnival groups, giants and big-head figures; the jinetas represent local trades, while Perlé, dressed in distinctive stripes, is the celebration's most recognisable character. Tuesday brings the large Ofertorio parade and Carnival of the Souls traditions maintained by associations, families and residents.
Feria de la Merced
Around 24 September, Herencia holds the Virgen de las Mercedes fair and festivities over five days. Plaza de España, Plaza de la Virgen and the fairground host religious observances, street parades, music, sport and association gatherings, while the Folk Festival, Grape Harvest Festival, tastings of Manchegan produce and the traditional pincho de la vaquilla express the town's farming and food heritage.
Other events and cultural traditions
The festive calendar continues with talks and exhibitions devoted to Carnival heritage, folk showcases and grape-harvest celebrations. The Town Council, carnival groups, cultural associations and older residents participate in passing on songs, dances, dress and recipes linked to community life in Herencia.
