Festivals in Castrillo de Murcia
Local festivals of Castrillo de Murcia
The main celebration of Castrillo de Murcia is the Colacho, a religious and popular farce linked to Corpus Christi and documented since the 17th century. The town is a minor local entity of the municipality of Sasamón, but the provincial work calendar publishes specific dates for Castrillo.
Usual tradition
The Colacho is usually celebrated on the Sunday following Corpus Christi. During one day, the masked character who represents the devil walks the streets with his colorful bottarga and ponytail. The neighbors build altars of flowers and, at the stops along the route, the Colacho jumps on the children born during the year as part of the protective rite. The religious procession, the families, the brotherhood and the inhabitants of Castrillo take part in a performance that symbolizes the defeat of evil before the Eucharist. The events occupy the streets and altars of the centre of Castrillo de Murcia.
