Santoña's festival calendar has two leading celebrations: the Carnaval del Norte, shaped by seafaring culture, murgas and the Juicio en el Fondo del Mar, and the patronal festivities of the Virgen del Puerto, which bring the town together around 8 September.
Usual celebrations
Carnival centres on the murga competition, Paseo del Reo, Juicio en el Fondo del Mar and Entierro del Besugo, whose procession ends beside the bay. In September, the Virgen del Puerto events fill the town centre, Santa María del Puerto church and places connected with the harbour with religious observances, music and community gatherings. The Council, murgas, cultural groups and residents participate throughout both festival cycles.
