Local festivals in Valverde
San Isidro Labrador is Valverde's patronal festival and reflects the town's links with El Hierro's farming and livestock traditions. The celebration is centred on the Plaza and Llanos de Santiago in May, with a pilgrimage, music, community events and a livestock fair.
Usual celebration
On 15 May, the programme brings together the San Isidro Mass, popular activities and the livestock show by the Santiago chapel. In the preceding days, schools, families, cultural and sports groups and the primary sector usually take part. Participants and organisers include the Town Council, schools, families, cultural and sports groups and livestock farmers. The Baile de Magos, with traditional dress and shared tables, is another defining event of the festival.
Other events
The Immaculate Conception shapes the town's December festivities, with Mass and a procession on the 8th. The Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes is a major four-yearly island celebration that carries the image from the sanctuary to Valverde and links the capital with the villages of El Hierro.
