Local festivals in Valsequillo de Gran Canaria
The San Miguel Arcángel Festival and Fair are usually celebrated for several weeks in September around the 29th. San Miguel square and church, the town centre, Plaza Tifariti and the fairground host a pilgrimage and offering, parrandas, livestock displays, a procession, horse races, music and open-air dances. The Town Council, parish, neighbourhood groups, livestock breeders, folklore groups and residents take part in the organisation.
Usual celebration of Suelta del Perro Maldito
At midnight on the eve of San Miguel, Suelta del Perro Maldito turns the San Miguel town centre into a stage for nearly one hour of street theatre, dance, music and fireworks depicting the struggle between good and evil. More than one hundred residents, amateur performers, workshops and municipal committees prepare this tradition inspired by the image of San Miguel carved by Luján Pérez in 1804.
Other events: the Almond Blossom Route
Between late January and early February, the Almond Blossom Route usually occupies a weekend in Tenteniguada, Las Vegas, La Barrera and the town centre. Canarian crafts, music and dance, threshing, milking, games and native sports accompany the blossom. The Town Council, Gran Canaria Island Council, associations, craftspeople, farmers, livestock breeders and residents maintain a festival founded in Tenteniguada in the 1970s.
