Local festivals in Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria
The Virgen de Guía Festivities are usually celebrated during the first half of August in the historic centre and Plaza Grande. The procession of the patron and the Battle of Flowers take place on 15 August, while papagüevos, a float parade, music and cultural gatherings accompany the two weeks of celebrations.
Other celebrations: Fiesta de Las Marías
On the third weekend in September, Las Marías renews the Voto de Vergara, made in 1811 when farmers from the uplands attributed the end of a locust plague to the Virgin. Saturday's Bajada de la Rama links the uplands with Guía to the sound of conch shells and drums.
Procession, pilgrimage and farming heritage
On Sunday, the procession and pilgrimage offering bring together branches decorated with produce, folk groups and traditional Canarian dress. Stewards, farmers, folk ensembles and residents sustain a celebration that preserves rural memory and the community's bond with the Virgen de Guía.
