Local festivals in Amorebieta-Etxano
The Karmenak and Santanatxu festivities are usually celebrated from mid to late July and last almost two weeks. An opening speech and txupinazo in Herriko Plaza begin several days in which cuadrillas, associations and the Town Council participate, with kalejiras, giants and big-head figures, txistularis, pipers and the Zornotza Music Band.
Karmenak and Santanatxu traditions
The celebration preserves the Virgen del Carmen day in Larrea, Basque rural sports, a marmitako competition, a farmers' and craft fair, drum parades, pelota, open-air dances, bertsolaris and fireworks. Zelaieta, Zubiondo, Ogenbarrena, the Amorebieta IV pelota court and the central streets host many of the events.
Other celebrations: Etxano and the neighbourhoods
Etxano usually holds its festivities over three days in mid-August. The txupinazo and giants are followed by an open-air dance, mass, pelota, a community meal, folk dancing, bertsolaris and a sheepdog competition, with residents and cultural groups taking part. Neighbourhoods including Boroa and Euba also preserve their own festival cycles.
