Local festivals in Oñati

The San Migel and Errosarixo festivities are usually celebrated over several days between late September and the first days of October. Foruen Enparantza, the parish church, pelota court, Etxaluze and the streets host mass, the descent of the Txantxiku, drumming parades, street music, sokamuturra, pelota and children's events. The Town Council, parish, txistu players, band, cuadrillas, sports associations and residents take part in organising them.

Herri Eguna

Within the festival cycle, Herri Eguna brings livestock, fruit, vegetable and cheese competitions, local animals, crafts, Basque produce, cider, a community meal, rural sport, dancing and a pilgrimage to the area around the University and the square. Farmers, producers, craftspeople, musicians, dance groups and local organisations turn the town centre into a showcase for community culture.

Other celebrations: Corpus

Sixty days after Easter Sunday, the Corpus procession crosses Oñati in a tradition documented since 1478. The parish church and historic-centre streets bring together the Blessed Sacrament, the twelve apostles, San Miguel and the dantzaris, who perform their ritual dances and bows. The parish, brotherhood members, dancers, musicians, Town Council and residents preserve this religious and folk rite.
