Local festivals in Oviedo
San Mateo is Oviedo's main city celebration, combining music, folklore, pilgrimages and events in the streets and squares of the Asturian capital.
Usual celebration
The festival is usually held over several days in September around the 21st, San Mateo's day. The City Council, bands, charangas, folklore groups and performers fill the centre, La Ería, Paseo del Bombé and several squares with concerts, lunchtime sessions, traditional performances and a pilgrimage.
Programme for 2026
The programme runs from 10 to 27 September, an eighteen-day period. Celtas Cortos opens the festival in Calle Uría on the 10th; La Ería hosts the largest concerts, while Bombé, Feijoo and El Paraguas present orchestras, guest bands and emerging performers. Romería del Cristo closes the season on the 27th.
Local public holidays in 2026
The BOPA declares 26 May for Martes de Campo and 21 September for San Mateo. These are Oviedo's two local non-working days and their scope does not extend across the whole San Mateo programme.
Other events
Martes de Campo is the year's other local festival and takes place in May, separately from the San Mateo calendar.
