Local festivals in Castilleja de la Cuesta

Holy Week is the usual celebration most deeply rooted in Castilleja de la Cuesta. The Inmaculada Concepción brotherhood, known as Calle Real, carries the Veracruz mystery on Maundy Thursday and Jesús del Gran Poder and the Virgen de los Dolores early on Good Friday. The Santiago Apóstol brotherhood, known as La Plaza, holds its penitential procession on Good Friday afternoon with the Cristo de los Remedios and Virgen de la Soledad.

La Vuelta on Easter Sunday

On Easter Sunday, the two brotherhoods lead La Vuelta, an urban pilgrimage recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia in 1999. Streets and balconies are dressed with flags and hangings; the two simpecados travel through the town amid red and pale-blue paper, flamenco dress, sevillanas and communal meals before the afternoon processions.

Other celebrations: velás and the Inmaculada

In summer, the La Plaza brotherhood organises the Santiago Apóstol velá, whose traditional high point is the dawn Rosary early on 25 July, accompanied by bell-ringers and women in flamenco dress. Calle Real holds its own velá in early July and the Inmaculada Concepción festivities from 1 to 8 December.
