Local festivals in Cártama

The festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios are usually celebrated over several days in April. The Bajada carries the image from the hilltop shrine to San Pedro parish church and, on 23 April, a solemn procession passes through the old town with pilgrims and offerings. The return Subida to the shrine takes place on the first Sunday in June.

Fair and livestock tradition

The fair accompanies the patronal celebrations and maintains a livestock tradition documented since the Royal Charter granted by Philip II in 1590. Livestock farmers and visitors participate in its commercial and social gathering, while another livestock fair is usually held around 24 September.

Other celebrations: San Isidro, outlying communities and Bella Jarifa

Estación de Cártama celebrates San Isidro with a procession and pilgrimage towards the banks of the Guadalhorce. El Sexmo preserves its procession and traditional threshing competition, while Noches de la Bella Jarifa transforms the historic centre with a market, music, theatre, falconry and activities inspired by the frontier romance of Abindarráez and Jarifa.
