Alcalá la Real combines religious and popular celebrations, a fair and cultural events. Its main dates include the Day of the Cross, the August festivities around the Virgen de las Mercedes, Etnosur and the Real Feria de San Mateo.
Usual celebrations
At the beginning of May, floral crosses and shawls decorate the area around Juego de Pelota and several villages. The patron saint, the Virgen de las Mercedes, is honoured on 15 August with a procession and fireworks. Etnosur occupies several urban venues in July, while the September fair brings together marquees, rides, music, livestock and equestrian events.
Other cultural events
Noche de Fuegos, the August festival concerts and events at Fortaleza de la Mota complete the town's cultural calendar. The Council, brotherhoods, associations, performers, livestock keepers and residents organise and take part in the different celebrations.
