Local festivals in Vegas del Genil
The Virgen de los Remedios festival is usually celebrated in October in Ambroz and coincides with the settlement's fair. Over several days, the streets and fairground host festival booths, rides and youth activities; the evening procession of the Virgen de los Remedios and San José ends with fireworks and brings together the parish, travelling fair operators, families and residents.
Viernes de Dolores and San Marcos
Purchil honours the Virgen de los Dolores on the Friday before Palm Sunday with religious services and an evening procession alongside Jesús Nazareno. In Belicena, San Marcos is celebrated on 25 April as a one-day fair with mass, a procession of San Marcos and San Sebastián, booths, games, music and a communal meal, organised with municipal, parish and community involvement.
Other events and traditions: La Merendica
Before Lent, on Shrove Thursday, Ambroz and Purchil celebrate La Merendica as a day in the countryside. Families and groups of friends share lunch in natural settings and former drying barns; Belicena also preserves a similar outdoor gathering at the beginning of January, centred on community life across generations.
