Local festivals in Santa Fe
The Capitulaciones de Santa Fe festival is usually held over several days in April, with 17 April as its central date. The town recalls the signing of the 1492 Capitulaciones through civic ceremonies, historical re-enactments, a medieval market, parades, crafts, music and cultural activities around Plaza de España and the monumental gateways.
A commemoration turned into folk culture
The Municipal Archive, Instituto de América, associations, schools and artistic groups take part in a celebration recognised as a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia. The Música de los Mundos festival and the re-enactment of the signing connect Santa Fe's historical memory with cultural exchange and festive use of its streets.
Other celebrations: San Agustín and the Quema del Penas
The patronal festivities honouring San Agustín are usually celebrated in the final week of August. The patron saint's procession, daytime fair and gatherings at the fairground are joined by the Quema del Penas, a papier-mâché figure into which worries are symbolically placed before it is burnt, a tradition linked to the twinning with Santa Fe, New Mexico.
