Local festivals and Granada culture

Corpus Christi is Granada's main festival and is organised each year around Corpus Thursday, a movable date between May and June. The fair lasts for several days and connects the events at the fairground with the cultural programme in the historic centre.

Among the traditions, the switching-on of the gateway lights usually opens the Almanjáyar fairground, with its casetas and rides. In the historic centre, La Tarasca accompanied by giants and cabezudos, the exhibition of carocas in Plaza Bib-Rambla and the procession of the Blessed Sacrament form the core events. The institutional caseta, the City Hall courtyard and Corral del Carbón host flamenco, theatre, music, children's activities, altars and traditional pottery.

The City Council, artists, tape recorders, brotherhoods, neighbourhood and cultural associations, civic centres, municipal services and volunteers, as well as residents and visitors, participate. The programming included specific participation measures, such as noise-free days in the attractions area for people with autism and activities at social and occupational centres.
