Local festivals in Alhendín
The patronal festivities are usually celebrated over several days around the fourth Monday in August. The fairground, Plaza de España and central streets host an opening speech, music, open-air dances, children's and sporting activities, street parades and religious events dedicated to San José and the Immaculate Conception.
Processions and the Río Dílar pilgrimage
The image of the Immaculate Conception, carved by Pedro de Mena, leads a special procession every five years; during the rest of the cycle, San José is carried through the town. On the festival Monday, decorated carts leave from below the Town Hall for a pilgrimage to the Río Dílar, with an outdoor meal and tortilla, sangria and cart competitions organised with the brotherhood, local groups and residents.
Other celebrations: Corpus Christi
Between May and June, according to the liturgical calendar, the Corpus Christi procession carries the monstrance along a route decorated with altars. Families and parish groups prepare the streets and accompany the day with hymns and songs associated with this local tradition.
