Local festivals in Aguilar de la Frontera

The February festival cycle is usually celebrated from Candlemas: schoolchildren make lanterns that are burnt in a public bonfire in Plaza de San José alongside the trial and burning of the Juilla. On the following day, San Blas brings families to the town's churches to have bread or sponge rings blessed, decorated with the ribbon known as a bulili.

Holy Week

Aguilar's Holy Week, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia in 1999, preserves brotherhoods documented since the late 16th century. Its distinctive scenes include the blessing by Jesús Nazareno in Plaza de San José, the Seven Last Words play, the Descent from the Cross and the meeting of the Risen Christ with the Virgen de la Antigua in Paseo de las Coronadas.

Other celebrations: Royal Fair and pilgrimage

In early August, the Royal Fair fills the open ground beside the ruins of Poley Castle with marquees and a livestock market recalling its origin as an 18th-century free fair. On the third weekend in September, pilgrimage groups accompany the Virgen de los Remedios from Veracruz Church to her hermitage at Fuente de Don Marcelo.
