Local festivals in Ontinyent

The Moros i Cristians in honour of the Santíssim Crist de l'Agonia are Ontinyent's largest celebration, although the Puríssima observance retains the status of the town's principal festival and an older tradition.

Usual celebration

The Moros i Cristians cycle lasts for several days in late August. The Baixà carries the image of Christ from the Santa Anna shrine to Sant Carles parish church; the comparsas then parade through the streets in the Entrada and perform the Ambaixades, with their historical speeches and volleys of musket fire. The Town Council, Societat de Festers, comparsas and music bands organise and support the events.

Local public holidays in 2026

The Generalitat Valenciana resolution declares 24 August, the Monday of the Moros i Cristians festivities, and 16 November, Fira Monday, as paid, non-recoverable local public holidays. The longer festival period does not itself extend those two non-working days.

Other events

The Puríssima, celebrated in December, completes the local religious calendar with events honouring the patron saint; the November Fira and neighbourhood festivals provide further community gatherings.
