Local festivals in Canals
The Sant Antoni Abat patronal festivities are usually celebrated from 16 to 18 January. The arrival of the first log on 8 December and the plantà beginning on 1 January announce the building of the great Foguera bonfire, the symbolic centre of festivities involving festival organisers, troupes, musicians and residents.
The Foguera, Sant Antoni and Els Parells
On 16 January, a parade, solemn vespers and the burning of the Foguera take place. Sant Antoni's day brings High Mass, a concert and a procession; on 18 January, Els Parells features the blessing of animals and a horseback parade through the streets, with gifts for the crowd, Les Voltes in Plaça Major and a communal meal of oven-baked rice cassoles.
Other celebrations: Fira de Setembre
On the weekend of the third Sunday in September, the Fira de Setembre combines music, paella gatherings, fancy dress, sport and cultural events around Plaça Pont del Riu and the Zona Jove. A children's fair and the Moors and Christians gathering extend the celebrations with theatre, filaes parades and communal meals.
