Local festivals in Peñíscola

The Virgen de la Ermitana patronal festivities are usually celebrated over several days from 7 September. The central days, 8 and 9 September, include the novena, floral offering, mass and processions through the old town between the sanctuary, Plaça de l'Ajuntament and Plaça d'Armes, with residents, the festival committee and cultural groups taking part.

Danses and the Moors and Christians battle

Les Danses, documented since the seventeenth century, form the heritage core of the celebration. Dansants, llauradores, cavallets and pelegrines accompany the patron with dolçaina, drum and the Asociación Musical Virgen de Ermitana; the Dansa Batalla de Moros i Cristians concludes in Plaça d'Armes, passed between generations by local groups.

Other events: Moors and Christians parades

In the second half of September, Moorish and Christian companies extend the festive calendar over a weekend. The presentation of standards at the chapel and the entrance and departure parades follow Avinguda del Papa Luna, Avinguda d'Espanya, Plaça de Bous and historic streets to Plaça de la Constitució, organised by the Asociación Cultural de Moros y Cristianos.
